Brickyard House

When surveying the current state of the project in the heat of Soc Trang's scorching sun, the architect team was struck by the recognition of human’s fragility when coming face to face with nature. Nestled together inside the shadow of a building nearby, we realized how feeble we are. Taking from this, our idea is to overlap the building blocks in order to produce natural shadows that shelter residents from the harshness of the sun, keeping the building cool throughout the year.
The functions of the building are divided among four blocks, resulting in a range of angles and air vents that help spread natural light to every corner of the building. The central block, serving as kitchen area and guest room, becomes the conjunction point for the anterior and posterior of the building.
This block structure provides plenty of spaces in between the functionalities to serve as gardens that refresh the air. Sitting under the porch, looking at the green garden, the human soul is relieved from the burdens of the mundane life to be rejuvenated in its peaceful natural state.
Honoring the client’s wish to design a living space for a family of three generations, D1 Architectural Studio has turned a brick-and-mortar house into a cozy home.
